Definitions

emeritus: retired or honorably discharged from active professional duty, but retaining the title of one’s office or position.

Eucharist: a sacrament and the central act of worship in many Christian churches, which was instituted at the Last Supper and in which bread and wine are consecrated and consumed in remembrance of Jesus’ death. 

gender-neutral: free of explicit or implicit reference to gender or sex, as is the term police officer (instead of policewoman or policeman) or the term humankind (instead of mankind).

homiletics: the art of preaching; the branch of practical theology that deals with homilies or sermons.

Jezebel: idolatrous and manipulative.

manna: food provided miraculously to feed the Israelites in the wilderness (Exodus 16: 14-36)

MDiv: Masters of Divinity; a master’s degree in religion

novel: a fictitious prose narrative of considerable length and complexity, portraying characters and usually presenting a sequencial organization of action and scenes.

passe: no longer fashionable, out-of-date 

paternalistic: the system, principle, or practice of managing or governing individuals, businesses, nations, etc., in the manner of a father dealing benevolently and often intrusively with his children.

prophet:  a person who speaks for God or a deity, or by divine inspiration.

Tetragrammaton: the Hebrew word for God, consisting of the four letters yod, he, vav, and he, transliterated consonantally as YHVH, now pronounced Adonai or Elohim  in substitution for the original pronunciation forbidden since 2nd century b.c.

YHWH: a transliteration of the Tetragrammaton.
